Further Garden Information
1. Gardens also often contain ornamentation such as stone paths, walls and statues. Gardens may also contain buildings such as sheds, follies, gazebos and pergolas.
A folly is a building constructed purely for decoration but one that gives the appearance of functional use, such as a castle. A gazebo is usually a pavilion type structure and they are mostly octagonal. The most popular type for residential gardens are the ones of wooden construction. A pergola is a construction forming a shaded walk or passageway of pillars that support cross-beams and a sturdy open lattice, upon which woody vines are trained.
Gardens will sometimes have raised areas such as decking or terraces. These act as a transition between house and garden and are often used for socialising. A terrace is a raised flat paved area or gravelled section adjacent to a house and overlooking the garden. A deck is similar to a terrace but is instead constructed of wood and is usually supported on posts.
